Ayr community fund re-opens after thousands donated to local causes

ML Williams Funeral Directors awarded £1,000 to Tams Brig Judo Club.

We’re proud to have awarded £2,000 to local projects here in Ayr through our Community Assistance Programme, and we’re now inviting applications for the third and final round of funding.

In our second cycle, we donated £1,000 to Tams Brig Judo Club to help them purchase new safety crash mats. This historic club welcomes members aged five to over 60, helping them stay fit and active, while building connections through sport. It’s a privilege to support such a valued part of our community.

Charlie Strachan has been teaching at the club since 1965, while Chris Nichol, who is deaf and blind, has recently been recognised as Judo Scotland‘s Disability Coach of the Year.

Funeral manager Pauline Ower said: “Tams Brig Judo Club has such a long history in Ayr and we’re delighted to be able to support a club with such a strong community spirit.

“They’re a fantastic, inclusive and welcoming club and by funding new crash mats, we are helping them continue their work so even more people can enjoy the benefits of exercise and community.”

Earlier this year, the first cycle of the programme awarded £1,000 to Megan’s Space, a charity founded in 2019 to support young people with their mental wellbeing. Their grant funded eight free counselling sessions for two young people in Ayr.

Pauline added: “It has been inspiring to see the different ways our grants have been used. Each project is unique, but what they share is the ability to improve lives locally, and that is exactly what we wanted this programme to achieve.

“I’m looking forward to helping more organisations doing fantastic work for the local community.”

The ML Williams Community Assistance Programme’s third and final cycle is now open for applications, with funding available for projects within three miles of its funeral home in Falkland Park Road, Ayr.

Grants are available to fund local activities which improve the quality of life of residents and the wider community.

Projects must align with one or more of the fund’s four categories – Health, Education, Employment Opportunities, and Poverty and Social Deprivation. The deadline for applications is October 27 at 12 noon.
